I recently loaned out my spare Athlon XP 2000+ CPU/motherboard while waiting for Intel to replace a 3.06GHz socket 478 processor that was unstable at 50C or greater.
Initially the new board would not boot. I knew the hard drive was already at XP SP2, booted from a slipstreamed SP2 OEM CD, and took the second R=Repair option to run a repair install. Entered the OEM product key when prompted. Repair went without incident and the system booted up and informed me I had 3 days to re-activate due to the significant hardware changes. Once I got connected to the Internet I told it to re-activate over the Internet which it did without fuss or tantrum. According to this: http://aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm XP will re-activate without hassle if it's been 120 days since the original activation.
