Thanks for the comments Carl,
From what I read quickly on the site:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm ,I was probably fortunate to be able
to reactivate even with the trouble I had.
I got the 3 day re-activation message also, however, my version of
Win Xp Pro was over a year old and I changed the MB, the processor,
and the NIC. I did assemble the original PC myself so the OEM system
was not 'locked' to the BIOS on the motherboard
I am signed up with the Genuine Windows Advantage designation but I
doubt if that had anything to do with the process.
Cheers,
Roy

I recently loaned out my spare Athlon XP 2000+ CPU/motherboard while waiting
for Intel to replace a 3.06GHz socket 478 processor that was unstable at 50C

Initially the new board would not boot. I knew the hard drive was already
at XP SP2, booted from a slipstreamed SP2 OEM CD, and took the second
R=Repair option to run a repair install. Entered the OEM product key when
prompted.
Repair went without incident and the system booted up and informed me I had
3 days to re-activate due to the significant hardware changes.
Once I got connected to the Internet I told it to re-activate over the
Internet which it did without fuss or tantrum.
According to this:

XP will re-activate without hassle if it's been 120 days since the original
activation.
