Thanks; will do.  FWIW, I'd probably rather stay with a known reliable AV and 
let the Security Center be unhappy that change AV just to satisfy some new M$ 
quirk.  But, I will certainly follow through on all the suggestions to see if I 
can unravel.

Then it's not an engine update. Sounds like your AVG may be
corrupted. As others already suggested, uninstall and reinstall.
If that doesn't fix it, try a different AV, like Avast.

their engine (core code) occasionally, which requires them to
shut down for 30 seconds or so.
