Here's what I think  someone has been saying happens.

Phone rings and no one picks  up.

After 4 rings, the answering machine picks up.

After 2 more  rings, the fax machine picks up. If it detects a fax 
modem sending, it  responds. Otherwise it hangs up.


*** Not so, if it detects a fax it receives the fax.

Eventually the answering machine hangs up, having recorded the  
fax "conversation".
 
**** Not so as it receives the fax and if it is a voice mail it  records that 
after the 4th ring.

Is that what happens?

If so, why does it matter where the answering machine  is?



****  I wish I knew, all I know is that it doesn't work for me  unless the 
answering machine is hooked into the all-in-one.
