Also run a memory test, just in case it's a memory problem that is effecting
the parts that the windows OS is using to access/control/cache the hard
drive.

As  Knoppix  5.01 starts  the  computer and  shows all files on the 80GB
Maxtor:
You may want to try copying them to a backup area on another drive.
