First things first, (and hopefully things will fall into place...)
To see a WinXP drive, you should use another WinXP (or newer)
computer... If you are using an older OS to view the drive, lots
of the things you describe can happen...
So, are you trying to see it with a running Win-XP OS?
And, if so, do you have SP1 or SP2 installed.
Have you ever run a drive "at least" the same size as the one
you are trying to run now. (Don't even try to boot from it,
that will "never happen again" with this particular installation...)
But to answer your "basic" question, I never saw a failure of
Win-XP activation cause "BY ITSELF" all that you describe.
My WPA-problems were generally caused by me changing too
much hardware too fast. Mine were easy to get re-activated...
(Even by doing it over the Internet.)
So, another question might be,
What did they do to try to "fix it".......

I installed the drive in my computer as a slave.
Still nothing. The entire drive seems to be trashed.
