From your explanation, there is a 99.5% chance the drive is now a
paperweight. I just had a similar problem with a Maxtor SATA drive doing the
same thing. It started to have problems when it got close to full capacity.
I was trying to copy files to another drive to create more space when I
started to get CRC errors and couldn't delete directories on the drive.
Shortly thereafter I got the dreaded "The disk in Drive D: is not formatted"
message then it just died.
It's now on it's way back to Maxtor.
Hopefully the drive your working on is still under warranty.

Hi,
I have a hard drive sent to me by a relative in the hopes I could salvage
> the pictures and other files from it. The entire drive seems to be
trashed.
I would appreciate any advice on how to proceed.
Thanks,
Jim
