That was just an FYI along with all the "other letters" I used.
I always "try to" put the CDs (and/or DVDs) on the second
MB IDE port unless I am SURE the add-in controller card
"likes them"...
The "spec" for ATAPI was always a little "forced" IMHO.
(I have read it was a quick kludge*), and I am not surprised it is
starting to go the way of the buggy whip. (Pun intended <grin>)

Here is a short blurb about ATAPI:
*Short for AT Attachment Packet Interface, an extension
*to EIDE (also called ATA-2) that enables the interface to
*support CD-ROM players and tape drives. "Stolen" from from:

kludge*: A software or hardware configuration that, while
inelegant, inefficient, clumsy, or patched together,
succeeds in solving a specific problem or performing
a particular task. From: http://www.dictionary.reference.com

Rick, I have the same set up. I just used the motherboard's ide interface and plugged my dvd writer into it.

FWIW/OTOH, I got a Maxtor (Promise) add-in controller card recently
for SATA/150PCI and "that" can no longer support CD drives... (Bummer.)
