You should always unplug the power when working inside an open PC,
especially so when removing or installing things that plug into the
motherboard.
.

As for releasing and inserting the battery that can't be predicted from what
you've told us. The types of battery holders and clamping mechanisms vary.
Basically you look at what you've got and figure it out. If that's not good
enough instructions... take it to a professional.

Subject: CMOS Battery Replace Tips

So is this as easy as it looks. I know to write down my settings and to
ground myself. No straps so I am just going to touch the metal case. Is
this one of those "repairs" where you just leave everything plugged in as
is or do you remove the plugs from the wall socket. I got a 3 volt CR2032
battery from Radio Shack for a 6 year old desktop. I guess I am just going
to be carful and slide a small screwdriver into what looks liek a slot or
an opening and does the battery pop out or will I be able to slide it out.
Putting the new one in. Those tiny holders or clips appear to be rigid.
Does the new battery slide in or do I just pop it in and applu pressure.
TIA.
