What kind of details would you want? I'd like some ideas as
to how to start to troubleshoot this.

When I have more than 1 problem I usually start with the one I
think is the simplest to solve while praying that solving that
one may fix another.

When in doubt I start with the 1st one.

The first one was the failure of his wireless network and since
that looked to be the most difficult, I bypassed it by CAT5-ing
his laptop to his Comcast modem.

No Service Packs ? Prior to Sp1 Xp did NOT support USB &
required that you install the manufacturer's drivers.

I'll check that. Don't new computers come with XP SP2?

When he first got his computer, all the USB stuff was working OK.

1) He has a wireless mouse that works for several minutes
and then goes dead. Unplugging the receiver from the USB
port and reinserting it brings it back to life for a few
minutes. Tried it on 2 USB ports -- same result. The
touchpad continues to work.

Fix USB.

Not sure what you mean. I will reinstall the USB drivers and then
check for SP2.

2) Both USB printers will not print. They are connected and
the power is on.

Paper ? Plugged in to AC outlet ? Plugged into computer ? Out
of Ink ?

Yes. Yes. Yes (USB). No.

3) Wireless network will not connect to any of the networks
it can see. Reset the router and it worked for a few
minutes. Hardwired network is fine. I ran the speed test at
speakeasy.com and got some very interesting results for
Comcast cable: 25000 kbps down and 360 kbps up! When the
wireless network worked it was very sluggish.

Networking problems are another bag of worms all by itself.

With the CAT5 Internet working, doesn't this point to the WAP? I
should point out that the wireless network that we set up using
that WAP no longer appears when Windows probes for nearby networks.

You say that the hardwired network is fine which tells me that
it's NOT USB related & we need ALL the specs about his
network. Leave nothing out.

OK. I won't be getting back together with him until Saturday.

FWIW companies that send out service techs around here get
$100/hr & networking specialists get $150/hr .

I thought I would try to help him before I turn him loose on
those folks.

These appear to be 3 completely separate issues.

Gee, you have more friends with problems than any 2 list
members combined. Please don't tell me that you have more
friends than everyone on this list.

No, I have no friends -- just neighbors who call and say,"Hey,
Pete, can you look at my computer?"

Notice how many list members are jumping in on this thread?

I'm refraining from saying something. ;-)

Most people & places would just tell the guy to use his
restore CD & they wouldn't care if he has a backup or not.

Doing that would only bring him back to his out-of-the-box
configuration, so that really wouldn't help much. And he's a
neoghbir, for cryin' out loud.
