Got my hands on said laptop today and ran lots of tests. The USB mouse didn't work in any of the four ports; ditto the HP printer and the Lexmark printer. Oh, the owner reported that when he took the laptop to his vacation home, the wireless networking worked just fine.

I tested his USB mouse on my computer and it worked fine, but apparently plugging my printer into one of his USB ports blew out my printer's power supply -- I could not turn the power on after that. Fortunately, my printer was under warranty and the good folks at Canon are sending a replacement that will get here Wednesday.

As the laptop is also still under warranty, I told him to contact Toshiba and arrange to drop it off or mail it in.

As far as Windows was concerned, the entire USB system was working OK. Hah!!
