you may also want to install MS' Windows Defender to run permanenly like
an AV program would do.

Also, start - run - msconfig, and google for any programs listed on the
startup tab running on each boot that you aren't sure of. Clean out your
c:\windows\temp & c:\documents & settings\<username>\local
settings\temp. Clean out your temporary internet files folder regularly
using control panel - internet options
