When I click on my desktop properties I see all kinds of things that lead me to believe that I can but I can't get it to work right.

What is the display adapter and what display software does it have. Most laptop display adapter software helps control secondary displays attached to the laptop. These usually allow the secondary display to have a graphics resolution different from the primary display. They also allow profiles to be created and saved for different situations. This does not apply to the plain vanilla MS display software that allows a secondary display but has no real adjustability or customization.

However, if the KVM does not have the capability to "keep the state" of the display on the secondary port of the laptop, the laptop will revert back the single display mode when you switch the KVM to the other computer. Most if not all modern KVMs have this capability.
