Howdy again Jim.

Re not accepting the windows codes It should accept the one it was created
with,
Presumably the one that was with the Compaq1 that you got the larger hard
drive with.

But - as you are going down the second drive path, the first thing is to
get the system back to working with the original configuration.

So -
Do you have 2 P-ATA IDE cables, and do either of then have markings such as
CS or master and Slave on them

What do you have connected to which interface blocks on the cables

On the drive, there should be some indication as to the action of the
various jumper settings
(if you cannot find them, then you'll need to use the drive type to check
with the Seagate site for the meanings)

It should be pretty basic - if the cable is a CS one marked with Master and
Slave, then the cable will tell the drive if it is to be a master, or slave
drive - and you can have 1 of each on a cable. That's what the jumper
setting CS is for - so the drive knows it is to take its setting from the
cable, but do connect the first (or only) drive to the master position on
the cable.

Other cables do not have the wiring to force a drive to be master, or slave,
and with those you need to tell the drive if it is a master, only drive, or
a slave drive. You do that by setting the jumpers appropriately
(Jumpers are usually at the rear of the drive between the power supply and
the interface cable)

Awaiting your response after you have checked that - Oh 1 and do check that
you do have 2 sockets on the motherboard for the P-ATA IDE cables.

Re Marc's comments on the HAL.DLL, you have gone past the major problems
that may have been caused by that if the system has booted, and decided it
needs to re-activate itself.
