Is that right? I think it would be better to represent this as a "missing
icons" problem than a "flash, redraw" problem if so, just so we all understand
what is happening.
This sounds like something that may be specific to your Xserver, video card,
or Xconfiguration. What Xserver are you running? Which Linux Distro?
Which Video card? Can you also reply with the output of "xdpyinfo"?
On another note, it sounds like your "&" error message went away when
you removed the "&" from your Desktop Icon Shortcut.
