Sorry, I wasn't plain enough. The screen flashes and the desktop is 
redrawn. I don't lose the icons permanently. The problem seems to be that 
some process occurs after the screen is drawn the first time which gives 
the '& is missing' error if I use 'win &'. The process still seems to 
occur even when I remove the '&' from the situation.

The card is an ATI Expert 98 - 8MB. I use the standard Mach 64 server and 
the distro is Mandrake 7.1 with your kernel sources compiled. Here is the
