Yes, I am. (I'm running X 4.0.1-1; I think woody is up to 4.0.1-3 now.
Maybe I'll have to upgrade again soon - the last time was so much fun :-) )

I get this behaviour too. Got it the first time I tried X4.

Haven't seen the problem with using fwin from a running X session
because I always start it from a second VC. FWIW, here's what i got
when starting from an xterm:
$fwin
X running on 0
Trying display 1.
X: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting.
xinit: unexpected signal 2
$
the same as you, I guess.
To get around the screen blanking problem I am following a suggestion
made on this list and setting up a Win screen saver. When this is woken
up, the whole screen comes back, whereas if I use Refresh from right
clicking on the desktop, the task bar stays black until overwritten by a
program label (only the part where the label was comes back, the rest
still remains black).
As I posted the other day, I have a PII/333, 128MB RAM and an (old)
Millenium II 4MB,
