just to reiterate for non slack-users - the slack tool rpm2tgz converts
an rpm to an enhanced tar.gz format package,  which has its complete
file-installation info at the front. This is in a form which can be
interrogated with less. The packages are usually installed using
pkgtool. (and of course you then need to run the postinstall shell
file). All at standard slack mirrors, and like all slack tools, robust.

I presume (though I've never used it) that rpm2cpio is similarly useful
