I had a similar problem with this set up.
There is a bug of sorts. Here is my video card section from the
/etc/XF86Config file. The backingstore option fixed me up.
I am not sure if this setup gives me the optimal performance for my card but
it works OK for quake.
Section "Device"
Identifier "RIVA TNT2"
# Driver "/lib/modules/2.2.14/video/NVdriver"
# Driver "nvidia"
Driver "nv"
VideoRam 32678
Option "backingstore"

P.S.
It would help to keep my mailbox straight if you would change the date in
your computer to the proper date. Yours seems to be off by 37 years.
