Mandrake 7.1's "mdk" kernel left my system unstable.
I too had the instantaneous reboot problem with 2.2.17.
So, I got the stock 2.2.16 and patched it with ReiserFS and Win4Lin2
non-SMP, and everything is stable and works great (except for all the RPM
acrobatics I'm having to do in attempting to patch Mandrake.)
