okay, i give up. i uninstalled win4lin. i purged every trace of it
i could find, including /opt/win4lin, /var/win4lin and /etc/default/merge.
i did a reinstall of win4lin. i then did a windows CD install. i then
did a minimal win98 install under my non-root account. and i still can't
access the cdrom. i also got rid of any trace of supermount on my
mandrake 7.2 system, just in case that was involved. after i did all of
the above, i was poking through /etc/default/merge, looking for references
to cdrom, and found this:

MERGE_CDROM_START=N

but i'm not sure that's the culprit, since changing the N to a Y and
relaunching fwin didn't make any difference. and yes, i RTFM'ed anything
i could find in the Support section on the website.
