I think it is more important to understand why Windows is unstable
first. Normal Windows 98 is not that unstable if you take away the
elements that make it unstable (Windows 95 has memory leaks and TCPIP
problems even under the optimal conditions). Typically I go through my
Windows 98 installation and disable things that is not needed (e.g. Find
Fast and some of System Tray stuff normally installed by MsOffice and
Corel Word Perfect). Generally Windows 98 is relatively stable for me,
except for some programs Windows does not understand how to handle the
exceptions.
Both Win4Lin and VMWare seems to do the same for me when I follow the same
principal as I took on Windows 98. That is, except for the programs and
conditions that screw up Windows 98, Win4Lin and VMWare are pretty
stable. VMWare achieve the stability by having a controlled box with very
predictable (emulated) hardware. Win4Lin probably does it by using the
actual Linux services instead of Windows once especially in the Networking
area (actually one of the most vulnerable things in all versions of
Windows). What I am trying to say here is Win4Lin and VMWare shall (and
has proven to me) be a bit more stable than Windows 98, however anything
that can screw up Windows 98 big time will also screw both of
them. Obviously the good news is you do not have to reboot the machine,
and Win4Lin will let you get back to your Windows much faster than VMWare.
It is probably worthwhile to diagnose your Windows 98 (or 95) set up a bit
to see if you have too much ill-behaving and totally useless tasks running
in your Windows (Win4Lin).
