I do not think it is your xawtv/bttv or settings.  I assume you are using
XF4.0.2 or XF4.0.3.  the tdfx driver for your video card does not contain a
working Xvideo extension. upto 4.0.3.  you have to go with cvs to get it
for now.
  My point is xawtv uses this by default and with tdfx_4.0.3 it will just
put a black screen.  So try not using Xv like this:
xawtv -noxv
I warn you, some where around xawtv 3.42 they changed display and my dga
and Xvideo does not work for xawtv now, so I use grabdisplay.  To do that
add/change in you ~/.xawtv file:
[defaults]
capture = grabdisplay
