After the failure thus far on the Caldera eDesktop 2.4 box (which
*should* be supported) I tried my Red Hat 7.1 box, just installed earlier
this evening. Even using the email/password I established for my office
work I couldn't get past the login screen. (My first attempt at signing
up from my home proved unsuccessful; it keeps telling me it doesn't
recognize my email, even though I tried it twice.) In any event...

Fortunately, I'd already UUCP'ed the installer to my home LAN.
Everything seemed to go OK at first - it recognized distribution and
kernel, downloaded the requsite files, then had me reboot. I couldn't
bring the box up using the win4lin kernel; I experienced a series of
"ERROR: /bin/insmod exited abnormally!" messages interspersed with many
"unresolved symbol" messages related to /lib/sd_mod.o, /lib/aic7xxx.o
and /lib/sym53c8xx.o - probably others as well on earlier screens. Then,
the final blow:

VFS: Cannot open root device "802" or 08:02
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:02

DAMN! I thought. But they don't call me "bulldog" (as in persistent)
for nothing. I was fortunately able to boot back using the "linux" kernel,
which looked like it was nonetheless starting Win4Lin, but that's apparently
a startup script. That proved obvious when I tried to run "winsetup", which
proceeded on until I was advised that the win4lin drivers weren't loaded.

I then tried a trick that proved necessary under an earlier Red Hat
install - building a new initrd image using "mkinitrd". That worked! But how
many among the Win4Lin target population would have come up with that one
(outside this knowledgeable group, of course)? Windows installed OK, but it
took a few tries before it would hold my chosen resolution; it kept
defaulting
back to 800x600. The final test (it's getting late!) was the Citrix ICA
dialup.
Serial performance through my V.90 modem proved *much* faster now that I can
go beyond 19200. Some display problems though - images sometimes fuzzed
over.

        More tests tomorrow.
