I found that with your symlink problem, RH kernels often won't make that
link. Technically it's not needed, but most of the time it is a
requirement. If you read the Kernel howto, it tells you to do that anyway.
Really, you just did what the rest of us do.

On the ethernet problem, I even rebooted my linux box several times to see
if it made any difference. No dice there at all.
