I have seen this type of behaviour and the nearest I could see
was that the person ftp'd the .pdf file with a mode of
ascii instead of binary, and corrupted the .pdf file without 
realizing it.  She re-ftp'd the file making sure she was using
binary mode, and she was able to read the .pdf.
