Welp, is my face red. After digging through my firewall/router scripts,
re-reading the FAQ, and then doing lsmod do I finally realize I had forgotten
to load the following modules to enable masquerading my VPN !

ip_masq_pptp
ip_masq_ipsec

I added these modules and reloading the firewall script and am now
successfully using the Microsoft VPN client to connect through my linux
host/router to a VPN server on the Internet.

Oh happy day. ;)
