Did you install Client For Microsoft Networks the first time? Your installed
Network components should be

TCP/IP
Merge / NIC
Client for MS Networks
File & Printer sharing (optional).

Not sure if that would cause all the symptoms you outline, but sometimes I need
to know the basics.
