Well, that certainly is interesting. I did that, and could install TCP/IP.
After I rebooted, I certainly did have an IP address. But I couldn't run
much of anything on the desktop. Double clicking on my computer or Network
Neighborhood did nothing. As in, nothing came up. Control panel wouldn't
run either. Internet Explorer wouldn't run. I used MSConfig and set it to
confirm driver loading, and on restart, I got a message about needing to run
win31setup. Ah well. I blew away my Windows installation, and am
reinstalling right now with vnet enabled from the get go. We'll see what
happens.
