no, every ethernet card has a MAC address (a physical address).  this is
how ethernet hosts talk to each other (the IP gets mapped to a MAC addr).
with winsock mode, your win9x session piggybacks on the linux network IP,
but for vnet, it pretends it's a separate NIC, so it needs a separate IP
address - if they ain't on the same subnet, oh well...
