interesting questions.  i basically stopped using win4lin 3.0, since i am 
committed to 2.4 kernels at this point, and although the performance issue 
has been acknowledged, i've yet to see anything concrete in the way of a 
solution.  various people seem to have had problems that were specific in 
some way, that were amenable to treatment.  the general slowdown issue you 
raise is still unresolved, as far as i know (i'd love to be proven wrong).
