I may do a fresh install of Mandrake on a > test system so I can start from scratch. Have been fooling around with the Mandrake 8.0 kernel and have seen no problems when applying the W4L patch. To ensure proper sources I copied the kernel source directly from the rpm. You can find the kernel source rpm in the Mandrake distribution. I have all my sources stored on a network drive but the files should be in .../Mandrake/RPMS/kernel-source-2.4.3-20mdk.rpm. To extract the source code, simply run the Midnight Commander. Select the source rpm and press enter. MC will then open the rpm like a file system. Then select and press enter on the file named CONTENTS.cpio. Follow the directories until you see /linux-2.4.3 and copy this to /usr/src/linux-2.4.3-20mdk. I suggest the directory name change to avoid overwriting the original source. Once you have the source copied you must change the /usr/src/linux symlink or the patch will attempt to update the original source (if any). Certainly not what you wanted to happen. From here you can configure, compile, et.al. Some FYI for Mandrake 8 users. Things to watch out for. Don't use the APM CPU Idle feature. It keeps the cpu usage to more than 50% on my system. Mandrake has this option on by default in their stock kernel. AFAIK, the only way to turn it off is to build a new kernel. Likewise, avoid the Launch Feedback option in Gnome. I have seen random sluggish behavior with this feature, although it is a nice idea. With these features off, the 2.4.3-20mdk-win4lin (as named by the patch) is running well. Hope the info helps.
