It’s odd actually how these things happen. My brother Steve recently had a
horrendous issue with what turned out to be MalWAre. He begun to notice that
his system was behaving strangely. There was increasingly unexplained network
activity even when the machine was supposed to be sitting idle.

His then current antivirus or security system which just happened to be Norton
AntiVirus was not picking anything up. When we added Steve’s system to our
business network, alarm bells started not just ringing but clanging
incessantly. So Gordon tried another solution. Since Norton didn’t detect
anything, he removed it. Then, he networked Steve’s computer to our Mac. Our
Mac contains a solution called “CleanMyMac” and another called “NTFS For Mac”.
Their functions are obvious. Then Gordon set ClearnMyMac loose on Steve’s drive
and that’s when we started getting some results. The system, it turned out, was
carrying not just 1 suspicious piece of code, but quite a lot of them.
CleanMyMac actually removed the Malware from Steve’s computer, given time.

As I say, we have now installed Vipre Business on Steve’s machine along with
MalWare Bytes Business. Hopefully with the 2 solutions running side-by-side, we
and Steve should be able to feel a little more safe when we have to use
Windows. The MalWAre Bytes utility is tiny, about a 9MB download if I remember
correctly. We are now having to use Windows more frequently still, now that
Gordon’s employment contract has been secured. His job will involve the
production of literature material for very young pupils. Some Internet research
will be involved and a lot of other in-house things as well regarding IT.
Gordon has been given the job title “Information Technology And Accessibility
Consultant”. I will talk more about that elsewhere; but I’m proud. Anyway, back
to the point. Malware is something which must be taken very seriously in my
view, and not just brushed under the carpet. Nor does it affect only Windows.
We have already highlighted Apple’s security leaks in another place. So it
looks like MalWAre is definitely on the increase. Ignore this threat at your
peril. Of course, solutions such as 1Password which store your data securely in
encrypted formats help. But that’s for another post.
