A few notes in reply to comments over the past couple of days...

1. Like Brenda, I also thought about the World Fair when reading Bob K's
thoughts about ethnic festivals. It's something I've attended but have not
been in the planning group, and I don't know if the Levee would hold any
advantages over the Veteran's Park / Bandshell area. The student diversity
group at WSHS (for which I am one of the advisors) has been asked to help
with that event in the past but the timing has been a problem--it has
happened on the first or second weekend after Labor Day and that doesn't
give the kids enough time after the school year starts to get the group up
and running and able to help. I notice that the World Fair folks have
recently decided to drop back to every-other-year. I think Lola Lehman is
the coordinator, and I imagine Project FINE is involved still, if anyone
has any ideas for them about how to increase their volunteer pool.

2. Duane, I was aware of the Jazz Festival. And I like New Orleans /
Dixieland style jazz, but it isn't everyone's cup of tea. I was thinking of
something with a more wide-ranging appeal, maybe including swing, bop, and
fusion, maybe even some blues, along with trad jazz. Just an idea.

3. Steve, glad to hear that there's still interest in the old WMS
auditorium. Could you give us that email address again for a contact
person? And do you know if the idea of a community arts network is still
being talked about? A while ago Will Kitchen was talking about something
that I think was being called Arts Force or Artspace, but I haven't heard
anything about that in a while. (Maybe it's because I changed my email
address?)

4. Phil, I agree that the building you talk about is lacking warmth and
historical ambience, but as Bob Sebo points out the view of the river is
great. A restaurant owner would have to do something a little more moderne
in terms of design I would think, compared to the Harbor View frinstance.
As for the former Zack's, I think Jefferson's is going strong. But the
larger question in my mind is why the tiny towns on the Wisconsin side of
the river from Pepin to Fountain City can support 3 or 4 interesting spots
of the sort you're talking about and on the Minnesota side you need to go
to Red Wing or Rochester or Lanesboro.
