Since the new contract has not yet been ratified or even distributed to WEA
members, this discussion is probably a little premature. Here's a quick
answer, as I understand it: under the contract, 100% of single coverage and
65% of family medical coverage is paid by the district. During the early
stages of this negotiation cycle, the teachers voted to accept a reduced
choice of plans (eliminating a popular co-pay plan in favor of a deductible
plan) as a means to containing projected increases in premium. Overall,
this means premiums will stay fairly level this year, but for some members
out-of-pocket expenses will increase. This restructuring allowed for the
possibility of improvements to the salary schedule, without having that all
eaten up by rising insurance costs.
