[Winona Online Democracy]
Good morning, everyone.
Now that the discussion on health care coverage has tapered down, I will
post a few observations as WOD list co-manager. It is as important to
acknowledge critical successes when they occur as well as the sticky moments
that require moderator intervention.
I would offer the suggestion that we use this "It's the Insurance
Companies" thread and its individual posters as models of WOD excellence.
The writers were Paul Double, Rich Plughoeft, Duane Peterson, Craig Brooks,
Cherisa Templeton, Dwayne Voegeli, Terri Hyle, Bob Kaldunski, Phil Carlson,
Steve Kranz, Karen Fawcett, Tom Severson and Bob Sebo. They have all
demonstrated how to engage in a very successful, informative, sustained and
healthy dialog on various aspects of health care recently.
I found this thread to be exceptional. Well done!
Here are a few specific observations regarding "It's The Insurance
Companies" that cause it to rise to the top:
* Although the subject of American health care presented divergent
views, the WOD posters were consistently respectful in their inquiries,
corrections and opinions.
* The lengthy dialog covered a broad range of health care issues -
health insurance benefits, contract negotiations, drug costs/pricing,
insurance corporations, private plans/government programs, local health care
coverage and the Winona market, network providers, court rulings, FTC
reports, related newspaper articles, personal experiences, employer
challenges, federal regulations, possible local pools, an area
healthcare/economy workshop, a little history of American medicine and more.
* I was particularly impressed that many writers not only attempted
to explain their views but sought to understand opposing views by inquiring
further. There were an unusually high number of follow-up questions which
led to greater understanding.
* Many writers enriched the dialog by sharing links to other online
information or by citing resources related to their point.
* Multiple clarifications and corrections were handled with
professionalism.
* Lots of creative ideas about healthcare reform were shared.
These people showed how to problem solve, not just complain about system
deficiencies.
* At times, the positions were challenged with friendly directness
and critical thinking, but the focus always remained on point and
issue-related.
Thanks,
Sharon Erickson Ropes
