I think they were simply trying to implement an rt (real time) solution to an online situation. If this kind of discussion were occurring in an rt public forum, it would be discouraged by the moderator because it's not going anywhere and other people want to speak...as this forum is online, and people can choose to read what they see fit and post at their discretion, perhaps it's not such a big deal.
