Concerning the Everland Collective and the controversy over their participation in the Hate Crimes Forum:

I guess it was addressed openly by members of the collective and the police chief at the forum last night (but reporters had already left). This is my understanding of the situation - but this is all 2nd hand knowledge, so feel free to correct me.
The Everland Collective is a group trying to do some real positive social justice change in the area as well as create a space (below the co-op) for a book and music exchange and sponsors speakers and panels, documentaries and bands. I hate to generalize a group, but some of their members would be considered "punks" or on the fringe of mainstream society. The police said that they had trouble at an Everland event at Holzinger Lodge (some people did drugs I believe?) and some of the members are former, or maybe current, members of the WinPunks - a group that is responsible for doing graffitti in town. Therefore the police did not feel comfortable having them represented on the panel, although they did quite a bit of the organizing. They were then not allowed to be on it. Seems like the two sides have talked a bit, at least at the forum.

I just think that as a city, we should encourage those that have felt alienated from society, when they are making positive steps to be contributing members, and we should not alienate them more. Meanwhile if individuals of ANY group do things illegal, they must be individually held responsible for their actions. From what I have seen and heard from this group, I think Winona is very lucky to have such an earnest, sincere, and hardworking group of people, mostly young, working to make the world a better place.

Clue me in here. What chain of events regarding police are you and others referring to?

I am very concerned about this chain of events. I am aware of the
numerous
positive events promoting social justice that the Everland Collective
has
been involved in. Before casting blame, can anyone from the Police
Department confirm this ultimatum that was given and offer an
explanation?
