Along the same lines, I don't think the public has a very good idea of the sorts of expenses that school board members, city council members and members of the county board of directors incur, and to what extent these expenses are reimbursed, or even which expenses are obligatory and which are simply expenses incurred by public officials attempting to be as well informed as possible.
If any of the elected officials would like to comment, this could be helpful.

I agree with the comments on this issue that a pay increase for Council members in this climate is a bad move. The money just can't be an issue (I hope Council member Krage had his tongue firmly in his cheek), but the message is huge, or rather the opportunity to send a positive message is huge.
Having said that, I hope we can make a distinction between local officials
and folks who represent us in Washington: the latter is a full-time job and
Washington is a very expensive city to live in. Those folks who are not
independently wealthy are making a huge financial sacrifice to serve us
there. I remember Sen. Wellstone commenting on this in some detail - he and
Sheila were not millionaires.
