Dear Bob and others,
I just wanted to add my thanks to Bob for clarifying the nature of the
compromise on the scouts, and for ringing the bell for those in need. We
had stopped our United Way payroll deduction in protest of the BSA policy,
and then reinstated our contribution when the local United Way announced
that they were satisfied discrimination was not occuring locally.

It is certainly a compromise, since I imagine the local BSA chapters do
send some dues to the national organization. I think it's worthwhile to
note that sometimes compromise can be a good thing. Arguably, as much good
can come from the person-to-person grappling with the issue engaged in by
Bob, Vicki and others, as from a more idealogically-pure stance of total
boycott. In my experience, it's a combination of those two types of
approaches that actually makes for sustainable change.
Scott
