[Winona Online Democracy]

In response to Mr. Brooks' comment on my statement that people don't want to
pay for prisons is based on a general indication from the public that taxes
are too high and that they don't want to raise taxes. That translates to
not funding certain things that are now in the budget. It also translates
to the message that new things should not be financed. My point is that if
we wish to "get tough on crime", we have to be willing to pay for it.
Wisconsin has been on a prison building spree for a few years now. In the
last budget crunch, one of the big issues has been how to reduce the prison
budget.
I am sorry if my comment was a too specific cause and effect relationship.
I agree that one cannot specifically state that if someone does not want to
increase funding, that the same person does not want to pay for prisons.
There is, however, a general relationship there.
