UPCOMING EVENT AT WSU NEXT TUESDAY
The U.S. Occupation of Iraq: An Eyewitness Report by Kathy Kelly,
co-founder of Voices in the Wilderness
On Tuesday, February 17th at 7:00 p.m., Kathy Kelly, founding member of
Voices in the Wilderness, will speak at Winona State University, in Somsen
Hall Auditorium, 8th and Johnson Streets. The public is encouraged to come
and hear Kellys free talk about the UN/US imposed sanctions against Iraq,
the invasion, ultimate occupation of Iraq, and how the people of Iraq have
been impacted by economic and military warfare. Kelly has been to Iraq over
20 times, her most recent visit being in January of this year. Her
presentation is sure to be captivating and will be followed by questions and
comments from the audience.
Kathy Kelly, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times and recipient
of numerous awards for her commitment to peace and justice, travels
throughout the country to foster education in communities about practicing
and advocating nonviolence as a means for social change.
Kelly was sentence last month, in Columbus Georgia, to three months in
federal prison for crossing the line at Fort Benning last November, in
protest the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, formerly
known as the U.S. Armys School of the Americas. Included in a statement
before sentencing Judge G. Mallon Faircloth, Kelly stated, recently, in
Iraq, during the US bombing in March and April of 2003, I saw how children
suffer when nations decide to put their resources into weapons and warfare
rather than meeting human needs.
As the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq continue and
revelations of intelligence failures in the U.S. and Britain mount ,Winona
Catholic Worker staff member Eileen Hanson reacted by saying, At a time
when the perceived threat of WMDs has brought us to a costly war and
occupation in Iraq, Kathy Kelly and Voices in the Wilderness stand as a
testament for the need for non-violent solutions to conflict in our world.
Voices in the Wilderness, founded in 1996, is dedicated to nonviolently
resist the roots of war, challenge military recruitment, corporate war
profiteering, and elements of western culture that wage low intensity
warfare, continually, against the biological diversity of Mother Earth and
against weaker countries whose resources are exploited to maintain our
overly consumptive lifestyles. Throughout the U.S. led Operation Shock and
Awe, Voices in the Wilderness organized Iraq Peace Teams to live along side
Iraqi people before, during and after the massive bombardment.
This event is sponsored by the Winona Area Peacemakers, Catholic Workers of
Winona, Winona County Green Party and Winona State Universitys
International Services Office, International Club, Communication Studies,
Residential College and the WSU Greens. For more information about Kathy
Kellys speaking appearance you may e-mail me or phone 454-3322.
