My understanding was that the folks behind this were looking at using it as part of an education/history of river commerce-type exhibit as well as other purposes that might be a good fit.

I think it would be great to involve the Corps of Engineers, Historical Society, Fish and Wildlife Service, CVB and others to brain-storm ways to put the retired dredge to work for our area in a new way.  Possibly this is what is already happening.

I remember touring the dredge one weekend when it was docked at Fountain CIty (many, many years ago--the 1980's I think!) and found it fascinating to find out about how the workers lived and served, the places they went as part of their job and how long they might be away from home.  The sleeping quarters and galley were eye-opening as well!  I'm imagining the final project culminating in some cool events featuring and honoring folks who served on the dredge, too.  It has a lot of possibilities.

I also happen to know that there are some products made from the dredged material--the fine silt.  It would be cool to have those businesses display those products in some type of museum exhibit on the dredge.

It might be difficult to approach, but very interesting to show the relationship between the river ecology and commerce and have exhibits related to the history of those trends and the effects on the upper Mississippi, etc.

The river is such a wonderful asset for us and the Dredge Thompson is a part of the history of the river.  It makes sense that it could be used as an attraction as well as house some offices for a related organization--the CVB is one of many that might be a good fit.  I don't know that the Levee is the right place or not.  I just know that if we want people to visit, we need more places to park!!!!!

I tend to agree the visitor center on Huff would be a perfect spot for the CVB as far as the location goes.  A sign on the highway would easily direct people to the CVB, the setting is nice and it is on a main road that leads to several key areas in the city.  The space in the building does not however seem adequate or appropriate to house offices. Location is key to a business such as the CVB.  If the goal is to increase tourism, the CVB should be a priority concern.  Have the city sink some money into another addition to the visitor center.  It would be money well spent for a change.

Placing the CVB in the Plaza center will be a mistake.  How many businesses have failed in that building because it is not convenient or have ample parking?  This building is not set in a key location for the CVB.

I don't know exactly what the Dredge Thompson looks like, but unless there is a way to make a Dredge look attractive, I think it would take up a lot of space that people would normally view as a lovely part of the river.  Looking across the levee makes better sense.  What is this dredge going to be used for?  I guess knowing that would also make a difference on where it is strategically located.

Subject: [Winona] Thoughts on CVB in Plaza Building proposed location,etc....

I wish to start a new thread.
How do others feel about the proposed location for the CVB in the
County's Plaza Building?
One of the questions I have regarding this matter is - Where are the
tourists that come to Winona and desire further information about
our beautiful city etc. going to conveniently park their vehicles?  I feel that is a
real problem in that area of our city presently and we will possibly
lose quite a number of interested tourists due to lack of parking.
Also, I thought the county was seriously considering selling that
building to help the revenue shortfall as well as try to consolidate
their county campus and have less buildings to maintain??
I wondered if there would be enough space in Amy's Winona
Island Cafe building to house some offices for the CVB?  That is
a city owned building that would be a much more appropriate
setting and have more parking space for tourists as well as
introduce them to the beauty of our city with the River right there
as well as the Wilkie etc.
This then leads me to another subject or thread  regarding
placing  the Dredge Thompson on the Winona Levee. This is an idea which
should be seriously reconsidered.  It is such a large Dredge that it will
look very awkward and cumbersome I feel at that location.
Why not consider putting it on Latsch Beach where it could be seen
from the Levee and if tourists wish (which I am sure some will) to
get closer and tour it or whatever the plans are for the Thompson's
final days, they can simply drive over the bridge etc.  By then the
Agahmoning Park over the reconstructed Old Wagon Bridge may be
a wonderful area for tourists to walk and view the beauty of pristine
and virgin nature plus all that is planned for that park area.
The Wilkie does look very well placed at the foot of Main Street and
is very impressive at that location.  Will the Dredge Thompson create
the same or similar look??  Most tourists are much more interested in
steamboats than work dredges I feel.
Don't take me wrongly on this issue because the City of Winona is very
fortunate to be offered the Dredge Thompson but placing it on the
Wisconsin/Minnesota shoreline I feel would be more meaningful as
well as looking in place on the Latsch sandbeach area where there is
alot of room for such a very large dredge placement.
Just my personal thoughts.
How do others feel about these issues?
