The steel is from a barge that is being scrapped, but that is
the general area that I assume is being described in the public hearing
notice.
I may have given the impression that this is an alarming
development, but I actually think it is a good location. Out of sight at the end
of the trees is a portion of the land leased by American Plumbing, a Goodview
civil engineering and construction company. I don't believe they are making
use of the facility and were at one time behind in lease payments. Being at the
entrance to the commercial harbor, it's a fitting place (if that is, in fact,
the land being described) since the Thomson's mission was to
facilitate commercial utilization of the river. Plus, visitors could
watch the barge fleeting activities.
Maybe having the dredge and museum there could
motivate an upgrade to the bicycle path by separating it from the roadway
and making a pedestrian / bicycle link from Levee Park and on to
Prairie Island campground and the Goodview's new LaCain Park.

I too noted Notice of Public Hearing on this matter on Page 4C
legal
notices area of today's Winona Daily News. It surprised me too that
there hasn't been more information for the public in the varied
media?
Is that why all the iron and steel is located all over the
sandy land area
where the winter sand piles used to be for the City? Wasn't the
commercial harbor going to be dredged and enlarged in that area for
improved barge holding areas etc.?
I note there will be a public hearing to determine the advisability
of
the sale of the property to the Maritime Heritage Society at Winona
City Hall Council Chambers on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 4:00 p.m. in
case some of you do not have an awareness regarding this matter.
