And yet this seems to be exactly what WSU has been doing as a public
institution. Focusing on endowments and contributions from alumni and others
to university foundations and to fund special projects. Creating the "New
University" that focuses on community partnerships to enhance the quality of
education and engage new resources.
And come to think of it, we've already been doing this at the Senior
High--the SOFA group that helps fund theater program needs and the capital
campaign for the athletic training center come to mind. It makes sense in
some ways that parent groups do projects to support some of those
"co-curricular" activities, but it seems we've reached the point where even
that is not enough (i.e., no musical this year).
I understand the idea that public education is just that--public. I agree,
Bryon, that it should be properly funded in order to provide equal
opportunity for education to all citizens. It saddens me greatly that my
children will not have the opportunities that I had growing up.
I also don't see any additional funding coming in this climate, so I am
curious to hear what this speaker might have to offer.
Of course, I am still a strong proponent of reaching out to members of the
community who don't have children in order to engage them in supporting
public education here even when they don't see a personal benefit to doing
so. That seems to be a huge roadblock to any referendum being passed--IMO.

Wow. This phrase really scares me. Will it still be "Public" education
if it
is no longer funded by the public? Our system of PUBLIC education was
once the
envy of the world. It built the American Middle class and was the basis
of
much (most?) of our economic innovation and leadership in the world.
If you can only find "a handful of people who will entertain school
finance in
any other way than raising taxes at the state and local levels", I think
that
just means we've done a good job of weeding out the knuckleheads. It's
PUBLIC
education for Heavan's sake! If you're looking for funding "alternatives"
to
state and local taxes, you clearly don't understand the meaning of the
word
Public.

Here are two education related items...
1. What do people think of last Thursday's School Board meeting?
2. Tomorrow morning there will be a speaker addressing the topic of
alternative school funding. I'm not familiar with the speaker but the
topic seems interesting.
Please see below.

The PHASED Board of Directors has a very special meeting planned for you
this month. The topic will be Alternative Funding Sources for Education.
Across the country and in virtually every state discussions are underway
on
the topic of funding education. Within those discussions one is
hard-pressed to find more than a handful of people who will entertain
school finance in any other way than raising taxes at the state and local
levels. Clearly, local boards and administrators have to put on their
business hats and create alternative funding sources.
Dr. Charles A Speaker, MN Department of Education, will address the topic
at the upcoming PHASED breakfast meeting on May 24, 2005 at the New
Student
Activity Center in the lower level of Kryzsko Commons, Winona State
University, at 7:00 AM. Some people will remember this area as the
Bowling Alley and Games Room at Winona State University. John Ferden has
graciously supplied the following directions.
Directions to Kryzsko
-Exit Huff Street at one of three parking lot entrances between Mark
Street (11th) and King Street (9th).
-Park in any area of the lot--not identified as a restricted (accessible)
parking area.
-Go to entrance located below the American and Minnesota flags (also
located near the anchor, large boat propeller & and the seagull atop the
post)!
-Once inside the building, go down the steps (or take elevator just
inside
the entryway) to the lower floor.
-New Student Activity Center is on the lower level.
