[Winona Online Democracy]

Mr. Hittner is correct--the desks discarded by the district defintely showed their decades of use by thousands and thousands of students. I know because I sorted through a pile and actually came away with two desks, intending to scrub them down, sand them, and repaint to help furnish the apartments of newly independent offspring. One of them was duly cleaned up and painted and did serve for a year or two as a night stand or television stand in one of my son's apartments. It has since been returned to me as he upgraded to real furniture. The other kids aren't interested.

I believe that the district was correct in not transporting these desks to the new building and also correct in returning these desks to those who paid for them: the tax payers of Winona.

As a gesture of goodwill, I am willing to donate either or both desks (as is condition only) to Ms. Fort or any other member of Online Democracy who feels they may have missed the chance on having a portion of their tax dollars in the form of discarded desks returned to them. Desks are available on a first come basis. You haul.

As a further note, the furniture and books at the senior high are likewise showing their age. I am hoping that, despite the failure of the second portion of the referendum, the district will be able to find dollars from its capital expense funds to replace these items which are decades old and heavily used by thousands, and that the good people of Winona will have the good grace and common sense to accept the neccessity of every several decades or so, to replace worn items.
