This is still another reminder to people to remain civil in their on-line discussions. Please avoid insults or name-calling or implications of various degrees of evil. Argue your cause vigorously, but avoid personalities.

I was in California for the past two and a half weeks. While there, I did not send or receive any information whatsoever online. I was entirely free of personal computers. Thus I am now wading through 953 e-mail messages. During my absence, other WOD board members undertook moderation responsibilities. Please note that a moderator's informal advisories (our preference) or warnings to individuals are often made privately, not in the public forum.

With respect to national or state issues, our rule has been to allow discussions when they have relevance to local issues. Admittedly, this rule allows wide interpretation, but we are part of the state and the nation, and happenings elsewhere often do impact Winona directly.

Note that in illustrating views, you should avoid posting the full text of copyrighted material. You may, however, paraphrase or quote parts or show the source URL. Later, I'll send the full rule on copyrighted material. Most people have received it as part of e-democracy distribution more than a year ago, but since it constitutes only a small segment of a thick report, it is reasonable to assume that few have read it.

Although I disagree with your opinion of the NYTimes, I have no problem with you or anyone else expressing their dislike for the times and the opinon that the Times (r or any other publication) is unduly biased in one direction or another. Doubtless, I would have equally strong and equally negative opinions about the news sources you prefer, but that is not the point. What I found appalling was the manner in which you chose to express your feelings about the Times article, your demand that Craig Brooks not post anything from the NYTimes on WOD, and the generally hostile manner of your post.

There has been discussion from time to time about whether or not national issues are appropriate for this forum. I believe that the general concensus is that at least some national issues are extremely pertinent for our local area. There is nothing wrong with raising the issue again, or expressing your opinion that a particular discussion is perhaps out of place on WOD, but it is important to be civil in doing so.

First,Phil Carlson. Maybe you need to clarify this to us once and for all, isn't this forum set up to discuss local and state issues? If you are saying this is a forum to cut and paste articles espousing views on world politics then I am obviously posting to the wrong board. I have always been under the auspices that this was to talk discuss air issues/concerns about local and state politics that affect winona and the area around it (obviously state/regional issues are also included in that). So, from what I am to believe form your statement is that this is a forum to discuss national politics, the mideast, the current presidential administration? I am confused because if I want to do that there are a myriad of blogs, yahoo boards etc. but anyway, I hope I am not being redundant in politely asking you to clarify this for us. Second, Terri Hyle, I for the life of me do not know how my letter pointing out my concern for the validity for the letter writers sources could have "appalled " you but I sincerely appologize for offending your sensibilities...whatever they may be. Thirdly, I appologize to the rest of the forum for if I am out of line for pointing out that cut n pasteing politically slanted articles on this forum which I thought was reserved for local/grass roots government type issues, is inappropriate. If Mr. Carlson infoms me that I am wrong, then I guess we are going to be having some debunking of common held liberal ideology here.
