About immigration...
It's interesting that we have many people who strongly support the supposed
"free" trade ideas but most of those same people are also staunchly opposed
to the free movement of people across borders.
Apparently "freedom" only applies to boxes and cheap plastic things but not
to people.
Would we even be discussing this issue if it weren't for some trying to whip
up a frenzy in their political bases?
And a nice motivation it is, tapping into almost pure racism and prejudice.
The huge rallies across the nation, some that have set records for the
largest events ever in some cities, are very hopeful to see.
It would be great to have an event of some kind in Winona to acknowledge the
rights of immigrants, to honor their presence and work, and to protect them
against unfair laws.
May the Statue of Liberty always stand tall and proud.

This is a very unfair comment. Employers are the only reason there is
health insurance available for the majority of the people in the US.
You seem to fail to comprehend that people do hire for productivity.
Those
who produce a profit for their employer are in demand. THEY GET RAISES
for
helping their employer to produce more than they cost.
We and employers like Paul respect our people, but need productivity to
reward. Not the lowest cost per hour workers.

Nice idea, Paul, but since we can't get employers to offer health care to
American citizen employees, how is that going to work? The real advantage
to employers in hiring illegal immigrants is that they can and do pay
lower
wages, no benefits, and don't have to worry about niceties such as fair
labor practices, safety in the workplace, overtime, etc.
I agree that one of the keys is to fine employers. But that's only one
key.
I think we also need to address the economic (and poltical) realities
existing in many of the countries from which people immigrate to the US.
After all Mexico's most profitable export is illegal immigrants to the US,
who send back more dollars than Mexico earns with any other export.

Let's solve the sole source of the illegal immigration problem.
Employer's
who knowingly hire illegal workers. If we would fine them $3.00 per hour
times 40 hours a week time 5 years or $31,200 for "each" illegal they
knowingly hire the problem would diminish. Then let's index that number
to
the CPI so that there is no economic incentive for employers to ever break
the law.
Then let's offer anyone half of the fine if they report an illegal hire
and
it is proven correct.
Needless to say, I think the problem would be solved quickly.
1) Then let's offer employers the ability to sponsor immigrants following
the practice of the fifties.
2) Employers agree that for the first five years they will guarantee full
financial support as their sponsor "should the individual need it". This
would include health care.
3) They agree to see that they learn to write and speak English,
understand
basic U.S. History and agree to assist them in obtaining full U.S.
Citizenship in the fifth year.
4) Impose a law that U.S. Citizenship by birth right is only granted when
their parents have become U.S. Citizens. However, U.S. Citizenship can be
achieved by the naturalization process by anyone who passes the
requirements
of (3).
If there is the will there is a way.
