I think this city makes balanced invstments.
Last night, for example, they finally bit the bullet and spent $615,000 on a
bike path under 61 to the middle school. That path should have been there
before the school opened...but at least it is being built now.
The street work being done on Pelzer is money well
spent.
The infrastracture subsidies we gave to the Marine
Art Museum were appropriate.
The start up funds for GRSF were
appropriate.
The theatre study will cost $250,000. Quality
qualified architects aren't cheap. Site selection and traffic studies and
parking and all of that is, no doubt, involved as well as enviromental study
soil tests and who knows what all.
I, too, would dearly love to the see the old middle
school auditorium renovated. But I don't think we can sell it to the
festival...they want to be on the river...and it's not a theatre...its an
auditorium...seats 800 I think.
As i said before, GRSF intends to become 2/3
supported by sales...1/3 through grants and private and public support...I don't
think that's half bad for a non-proft theatre if they can do it.
