[Winona Online Democracy]

My point was that the local and state governments (along with the people
themselves) are handling the situation in Colorado. This is as it should
be. I am not aware that there has been a request for disaster relief or
assistance. I never asserted that no government was involved.

This is just the opposite of the situation in Louisiana and New Orleans in
2005. The state and local governments failed in their own responsibilities
and used the blame game regarding FEMA as a cover up. Unfortunately, many
people have bought into this scam.

Even if the "Denver Post" message has inaccuracies, the realities of the
differences between how Colorado and Louisiana dealt with their respective
weather events are stark.

The underlying theme of my message is factual. There is more to be gained
by a basis in an unkind reality than a kind fantasy.

Glen,

The Snopes site indicates that the message Paul sent was a variation on the
October 2005 e-mail - it's almost word-for-word. That original e-mail was
false, and so is the one referring to Colorado. "The government" is involved
in the Colorado snowstorms, as it always is in an emergency situation -
state troopers and snow plows keeping people safe on the highways, National
Guard troops helping feed stranded cattle, etc.

And - not to nitpick, but among the inaccuracies - the e-mail stated that
the TV network news people didn't show up and report on the storms. In my
house, anyway, we've seen lots and lots of news coverage about the recent
weather in Colorado.

My point is two-fold. First, e-mails like this are generally inaccurate and
shouldn't be blindly forwarded. Second, the underlying theme of this
particular message is unkind, to say the least.

The urban legend report has no relationship to the December events. It
talks only about the October events. The point Paul made still stands
unless there are other facts of which I am unaware.

Thank you Beth for helping point out the Urban Legend Paul got caught up in.

BTW -- who do you think is paying to get feed to cattle and food to people
and to get people to safe places and to house those made homeless due to the
blizzard. And, it wasn't Denver that got hit so bad -- it was the outlying
areas in SE CO. I see absolutely no comparison between these two natural
disasters in terms of the toll on human life and property anyway.
I am disappointed that we Americans get so easily conned by these
exaggerated urban legends.

The information in this e-mail is incorrect. Also, a very similiar (and
similarly incorrect) e-mail made its way across the Web in the fall of 2005,
after extreme blizzards in the Dakotas.
